Moving a MyBB forum to a new server and upgrading it to the latest stable release is truly a pain. It’s not for the faint hearted.
I like MyBB due to its clean design. As far as I am concern, it has the best method of customization among all the available opensource PHP forum scripts due to its plugin methodology. Because of these features, I dumped the other PHP forum script for MyBB.
After moving all the files and database to the new server, I updated the config file to suit the new server parameters. But I get an “Internal Server Error”. It took me a couple of days to figure out what is the cause of this problem. MyBB documentation does not provide any comprehensive guideline on how to solve this problem. One more thing, it seems (IMHO) that the MyBB community is not friendly as I seen nasty replies to one of the queries about this problem. The solution to this problem is to have the correct permissions to the folders (755) and files (755).
After correcting the problem, the upgrade process was initiated only to find another error.
MyBB has experienced an internal error and cannot continue. Please contact the MyBB Group for support.
Due to the reason I previously mentioned, I don’t want to go to the MyBB community to ask to help. Anyway, If ever I will not be able to solve this problem, I will just have to migrate to another forum script. It is still a pain but may be less painful.
I undertand that the minimal error display prevents exposing about the server to unwanted visitors. But it would be best for the MyBB forum script to all least have some settings to display all error to forum administrators so that the problem could be easily fixed.
