Cyber Bullying

Cyber bullying is now becoming a problem in modern society. There are incidents where teenagers committed suicide as they could not tolerate any further the cyber bullying they are getting.

What is Cyber Bullying? I was able to get two definitions:

Cyber-bullying is “when the Internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person” – wikipedia.org

Bullying which is carried out through an internet service such as email, chat room, discussion group or instant messaging. It can also include bullying through mobile phone technologies such as short message services (SMS). – netalert.gov.au

Though cyber bullying is more common in teenage group, other older age group could become victims as well.

How cyber bullying could be avoided?

  • Parents should be aware on what web sites their kids are visiting. Social networking sites, chat rooms, or similar should be avoided. Proper advise is necessary rather than banning the kids as it may create some rebellious feelings of the kids towards parents.
  • Make your kids active in other activities such as sports.
  • Parents and teachers cooperation is necessary
  • Kids should attend a workshop where a Police Officer could talk about the causes and implications of cyber bullying
  • … many more …

Cyber bullying prevention should start at home, parents should be proactive on this matter as it may seem not a big problem at the moment, soon this could become as worse as drug problems.
